"As he trudged in the blindness of his hood, he knew that he was leaving behind more than his father and his mother and his brothers in the village of his birth, and this filled him with sadness as much as terror. But he knew it must be done, as it had been done by his father before and would someday be done by his son. He would return, but as a man."
~Alex Haley's Roots
The Rites of Passage under the Akil Method is committed to effectively training young boys and girls to become responsible young men and women and to join the ranks of today's leaders.
Our youth have become complacent with the false understanding that manhood or womanhood is an automatic status attained merely by living to reach a certain age. However, there is a rigorous process of learning, growing, and maturing that young people must endure in order to be introduced to their newfound responsibilities in their homes, schools, and communities.
Because every Rites of Passage Program is designed to specifically meet the needs of its immediate community, the Akil Method will highlight the following areas: Using the African principals of the Nguzo Saaba as a guide for strengthening the Lynn community- building positive, productive relationships among family, the opposite sex, and the community- applying proper eating and exercise habits while avoiding drugs and alcohol to maintain a healthy body- and understanding how money is earned and used responsibly to accrue wealth."
